Tulips with delivery in Bucharest: varieties, the Romanian spring, and 8 March

In Bucharest, spring starts with two traditions — Mărțișor (1 March) and 8 Martie. On Mărțișor people give red-and-white "mărțișor" charms, often alongside the first flowers; on 8 March, merged with Mother's Day, the city turns into the biggest flower day of the year, with men carrying tulips to colleagues, wives, and mothers. By April the spring beds in Cișmigiu Gardens, Herăstrău, and along the boulevards fill with bright planting. Here a tulip is the sign that winter has retreated from the Romanian Plain.

The category covers single-variety bouquets from 11 to 51 stems, mixed spring arrangements, and gift boxes pairing tulips with companion flowers — narcissi, ranunculus, anemones. The Romanian spring warms unevenly, with cold returns, so the tulip season here is concentrated — March to May — and delivery timing matters.

Which varieties to choose

Dutch growers release hundreds of tulip varieties every year. We select the ones that combine stem strength, long vase life, and an interesting look — the criteria the Bucharest buyer values.

  • Strong Gold — golden-yellow, a classic tulip on a tall, even stem. A hit for 8 March orders, and a good match for white and green-toned spring arrangements.
  • Red Impression — rich red, a large bud, a very sturdy stem. Suited to large single-variety bunches from 25 stems.
  • White Dreamland — pure white, slightly matte. Neutral and elegant, good in mixed spring bouquets.
  • Purple Flag — deep violet. A popular pick for those after a colour beyond the red-yellow-white palette.
  • Queensday — pink-and-orange bicolour. A decorative group with a fuller bud shape.
  • Black Hero — deep dark-purple, almost black, a double tulip. An unusual choice for the modern interiors of the centre.

Occasions and seasonality

The tulip is the flower of the Romanian spring. 8 Martie (Women's Day and the traditional Mother's Day) is the year's main peak for it: demand for tulips on these days outstrips any other occasion. Before it come Mărțișor (1 March) and Dragobete (24 February). Then Paște (Orthodox Easter) in April or early May, followed by the official Mother's Day on the first Sunday of May. For offices in the centre, tulips in vases are a regular fixture from February to May.

Tulips are given by the single stem less often than roses — bunches of 15, 25, and 51 are more typical. For 8 March, mixed-colour armfuls are especially in demand: several shades in one bouquet read more vividly than a single colour.

Freshness and logistics

The tulips in our catalogue are of Dutch origin, from the Aalsmeer and Royal FloraHolland auctions in Naaldwijk, via European hubs and the wholesale flower market in central Bucharest. An overnight refrigerated truck on European motorways brings a batch to Bucharest in roughly 24–30 hours under deep cooling (+2…+4°C); tulips arrive in closed buds. They mature at the recipient's end — standard practice that extends shelf freshness.

An important point for the Bucharest climate: on warm, sunny spring days tulips open noticeably faster. For a large event, take delivery the evening before rather than the morning of the day, especially when warm weather is forecast.

"The tulip is the most temperature-sensitive flower we work with. In Bucharest the spring weather swings: cold in the morning, sun by noon — and the buds open before your eyes. For large orders I recommend delivery the day before the event, not the day of. And before 8 March, order early — it's the hottest flower day of the year."

Delivery specifics in Bucharest

Bucharest lies on the Romanian Plain, about 70–90 m above sea level, in the valley of the Dâmbovița. The climate is temperate-continental: winters are cold, around −5 to +2°C and down to −15°C when the steppe crivăț wind blows, with snow possible from December to February. Summers are hot and dry, +28–35°C and above +38°C in heatwaves. Spring warms unevenly, with cold returns, and sunny spells can speed tulips into opening.

We deliver across all sectors of Bucharest: Centrul Vechi and Calea Victoriei, Dorobanți, Primăverii, Aviatorilor, Floreasca, Cotroceni, Pipera, Băneasa, Tineretului, Berceni, Drumul Taberei, Militari, Titan, Vitan. We take corporate orders for offices, restaurants, and hotels throughout the season. Payment is in lei. For 8 Martie and Paște, book 3–5 days ahead — on peak days demand for tulips rises sharply.

Care at home

Tulips keep growing in the vase — a quirk of theirs: the stems lengthen by 3–5 cm after they go into water. Cut them at a 45° angle, remove the lower leaves, and change the water daily or every other day — tulips are very sensitive to bacteria in the water. A cool room temperature of +15…+18°C extends their life to 8–10 days.

Don't add anything extra to the water — aspirin and a copper coin work worse than clean, cool water changed regularly. On warm, sunny days it's best to keep tulips in the coolest room and move them to the refrigerator overnight to slow the buds from opening.
