Flowers for 8 March: what early spring stems actually do

International Women's Day falls in the week when the shop floor turns over to bulbs. Tulips, hyacinths, daffodils, mimosa. They behave nothing like roses, and half the disappointment that follows the date comes down to that difference.

A cut tulip is still alive in a way a cut rose is not.

It keeps growing in the vase, a centimetre or two over the first days, and it bends towards the light. Leave the bouquet on a windowsill overnight and by morning every stem leans the same way. Turning the vase once a day evens that out. Cold water suits tulips better than warm, the vase wants filling only a third of the way up, and a cool room buys several days that a spot beside a radiator takes back.

None of that is damage, though it looks like damage to anyone expecting a bouquet to hold its exact shape.

Daffodils bring a complication worth knowing about. Their cut stems release a sap that shortens the life of tulips and roses standing in the same water, so they are conditioned on their own for a few hours first, or given a separate vase.

Mimosa

Mimosa divides people. In a heated room it dries within days and the fluff loses its brightness, but dried mimosa keeps its shape for months, and plenty of recipients still have last year's sprig on a shelf. Kept in water and misted lightly, it stays soft for longer.

Who gets what

Most people give flowers to several women on the same morning, which turns the day into a question of proportion rather than composition. Identical small bouquets for colleagues remove the comparison a mixed set would invite. A teacher needs something she can carry home alongside everything else she was handed that day. The largest bouquet belongs to whoever you have a personal relationship with, and shrinking it for the sake of symmetry helps nobody.

A wrapped sheaf held in one hand while the other opens a door is a practical object. A tall arrangement in a heavy ceramic pot is not, however well it sits on a counter.

Supply, briefly

Bulb flowers are planted months ahead for this date and the volume is settled long before the first order arrives. What runs out first is the specific thing: a named tulip variety, a particular shade, a longer stem. Plain red roses will still be there on the morning itself, along with everyone else who left it that late.
