Baskets with lisianthus: the week it spends opening
This arrangement is not finished on the day it is delivered. Each stem carries an open flower, a half-open one and several tight buds, and only the first of those is doing any work when the basket arrives. The rest open in sequence over the days that follow. What stands on the table at the end of the week is a fuller thing than what came through the door.
That is unusual for anything built in foam.
Days one and two
At first the basket looks sparser than expected, and people who ordered from a photograph occasionally say so. The open flowers sit at the top of the dome, the closed ones lower and inside, and the green of the buds still counts as foliage rather than as colour. Nothing has gone wrong.
Water use is highest now. The block is losing moisture to the air as well as to the stems, and its surface dries while the centre is still wet.
Topping up is the only task the format hands over. Water goes in slowly at the rim until the block stops taking it, and the check is made with a fingertip rather than by eye, since damp foam springs back and dry foam crumbles under pressure. Nobody has to find a vase, trim anything or change water, because the water is already inside the basket. A block that has dried right through takes water back reluctantly. The flowers standing in it show that loss within a day.
Midweek
By the middle of the week the second flower on most stems is open and the arrangement has closed its own gaps. This is the point it was designed for. Florists build with that in mind, leaving room between the heads at assembly rather than packing the dome tight on day one.
A basket that looks perfect on arrival will look crowded later.
The petals are thin, closer to silk than to the firm structure of a rose, and they crease if anything presses against them. Nothing should be set on top of the arrangement and nothing rearranged inside it. The stems snap at the joints where side shoots leave the main branch, and they snap in the hand far more often than in transit. Once a flower is seated it stays where it is.
What ends it
Leaves buried in the wet block sour before the flowers fade. The smell arrives first, and it is the usual reason one of these baskets is thrown out early, so a careful build strips the lower stem before seating it.
Spent flowers are taken off the branch one at a time, close to the joint, leaving the unopened buds beside them untouched. The stem carries on and opens the next one. A whole stem comes out only when nothing is left on it, and the empty socket is covered with a leaf rather than refilled. Foam does not feed an old channel.
Heat shortens the entire sequence. In a warm room the buds open faster and the block dries faster, and together those two can compress the week into a few days. A cool spot away from direct sun and radiators is worth more here than anything else the recipient can do.
The colours stay quiet throughout, cream, white, lilac and soft pink, often with a darker edge to the petal. Nothing in that palette carries across a room, which is part of why the format suits bedside tables and small desks.
