Ecuadorian roses: a long stem asks something of the room
These are the roses people picture when they picture roses: a heavy head on a straight, thick, notably long stem. What the catalogue photograph never shows is that the flower arrives with conditions attached, and the room it goes into has to meet them.
Most complaints about long-stem roses are really complaints about the container.
The vase problem
An ordinary kitchen vase is built for a bouquet from a supermarket. Put long heavy stems in it and the centre of gravity ends up above the rim, so the whole thing tips the first time somebody closes a door.
What these flowers need is height and a broad, weighted base. Roughly speaking the vase should hold about half the stem, which for this group means a tall vessel rather than the one already on the shelf.
Cutting the stems down solves the balance and throws away what you paid for. If the recipient owns nothing tall, send a bouquet built on shorter stems instead and keep the money.
How they read in a space
Height changes where the flowers live. A tall arrangement works on the floor, on a console against a wall or on a side table, and it fails in the middle of a dining table because nobody can see the person opposite.
The heads sit at eye level or above, which is why this is the format for entrance halls, receptions and rooms with an audience. From a distance the outline is what registers, and a straight stem holding a large bloom above the rim gives a clean silhouette that a rounded hand-tied bunch cannot.
Small flats work against all of that. A tall vase in a studio takes the only free surface and gets caught by every passing sleeve.
Presentation before the vase
Long stems are handed over differently. The bouquet lies along the forearm rather than being held out at arm's length, and the recipient takes it the same way, which is why photographs of these bouquets always look staged even when they are not.
They also need a serious wrap. A large head on a long lever swings during a journey, and without a firm collar and a protective cone the outer petals bruise against each other before the door is even opened.
Anyone travelling with one should know that it will not fit in a car boot upright and will not fit across the back seat either without the heads hanging over an edge.
Why the flower is shaped this way
The plantations sit high in the mountains close to the equator, where the days stay a constant length and the nights are cold. Growth is slow, so the stem has time to thicken and lengthen and the bud has time to build layer after layer of petal.
That same slowness continues after cutting. The bud opens gradually over several days and looks its best around the middle of the bouquet's life rather than on the day it arrives, so a tight head on the first evening is a sign of a fresh flower and not a poor one.
Ecuadorian roses suit occasions with a room and an audience, and a recipient in Vancouver who has somewhere to put them. Where neither is certain, ask before ordering, because the most impressive bouquet in the shop is worth nothing standing in a bathtub because there was no vase to take it.
