Flowers in a box: an arrangement that arrives finished

The container is a working part of the arrangement rather than packaging around it. Soaked floral foam sits under the top layer of blooms, every short stem is pushed into it separately, and the card wall is lined so the wet base never touches it. Nothing has to be unwrapped, cut or thrown away at the other end.

So the only decision left to the recipient is where to put it, and that decision is worth making before the order rather than after.

Rooms that suit it

Desks come first. An office has no vases, no sink anyone wants to trim stems over and nobody willing to take on the watering of a colleague's flowers, whereas a box asks for a thin stream at the rim once a day and nothing else. It also sits low enough that two people either side of a desk can still see each other.

Dining tables are the second place, and there the container decides the result. A round box builds upward into a dome and is read from above, while a long crate holds a low line down the middle of the table and works from a seated eye.

Then there are the rooms nobody owns. A hotel in Downtown or on Palm Jumeirah, an apartment in Business Bay taken for a few months, a stand at a trade event: nothing in any of them can be borrowed as a vase, and a box is the one format that needs nothing borrowed.

Four addresses account for most of these orders here:

• A desk in DIFC, where the arrangement has to survive a working day without anyone tending it.
• A hotel room in Downtown, Marina or on Palm Jumeirah. It is set down once and stays where it lands.
• An apartment in JBR, usually one where the kitchen cupboards belong to a landlord.
• A business handover, where the box is given open, with no cone of paper to deal with in front of everyone.

The week you are buying

These are fresh cut flowers, so the arrangement lives the ordinary span of cut stems, somewhere between one and two weeks depending on the varieties in it and on the room it stands in. Dutch roses at 60 to 90 cm and greenhouse chrysanthemums from the UAE make up a good part of what goes into these boxes, with Ecuadorian roses used far less, since most of their 120 cm would be cut away.

Water is the whole of the maintenance. The foam layer is shallow, it dries from the top down, and a warm room empties it faster than anybody expects, so the honest instruction is to pour at the rim each morning and stop when the surface no longer takes it in.

Do not pour over the heads. Water settling between petals leaves brown edges within a day, and on pale varieties it shows from the far side of the room.

Heat does the rest of the damage. Summer here reaches 40 °C with high coastal humidity, but the box itself will be indoors, and indoors the danger is the draught from an air conditioner and a sunny windowsill, both of which pull moisture out of the petals faster than shallow foam can replace it.

Delivery takes 2 to 4 hours between 9 AM and 10 PM, orders start from 250 AED, and payment goes through Apple Pay or cash to the courier. In summer we add insulated packing and keep the box out of direct sun on the way.

Anyone ordering flowers in a box in Dubai should say which surface it lands on and whether anyone will be there each morning to top up the rim. Both answers change the container we build in, and neither can be changed once the stems are planted.
