How to make peonies open

Peonies often arrive as tight buds — that's normal and even a plus: they last longer that way. To help them open, put them in warm water at room temperature. The first petals appear within a day or two.

If you need to slow them down, keep the bouquet cool. The lower the temperature, the slower the opening. That way you can time peak beauty to the date you need — for example, to the Swedish Mother's Day, Mors dag, on the last Sunday of May.

Peonies love water. Change it every day and trim the stems. Keep the bouquet away from direct sun and draughts. Don't put peonies next to fruit — ethylene speeds up wilting. With proper care peonies last 5–7 days, sometimes longer.
