Valentine's Day flowers: the size of the gesture, not its meaning

Nobody has to work out what a bouquet means on 14 February. The date explains itself, so the real decision is about degree, and that is the part people get wrong.

A hundred red roses sent in the fourth month of a relationship say something the sender may not have intended to say yet. The same hundred roses on a tenth anniversary read as ordinary generosity, because the context carries them. Between those two poles sits almost every order, and the useful question is not what looks impressive in a photograph but what the recipient will be comfortable receiving in front of whoever else is in the room.

Red roses are chosen because they need no explanation, which is also their limitation. A bouquet that says one obvious thing says nothing about the particular person receiving it.

What sells out first is never the cheapest item. It is the specific one: a named peony-shaped variety, a particular shade of coral, a stem length that suits tall vases.

Orders placed on the morning of the day itself get what is still standing in the cooler, and by then the assortment has been picked over twice. Florists work through that day in one continuous shift, packing runs longer than usual, and courier routes are stacked ten and fifteen drops deep. Delivery windows stretch for the same reason that restaurant tables do. None of this is a matter of anyone trying harder on the day, since the number of hours and the number of stems were both fixed weeks earlier.

Getting it into the right hands

Sending flowers to a workplace makes the gift public. Some people want exactly that. Others find it uncomfortable, and only the sender knows which is true.

Home delivery is quieter but needs somebody there to open the door. Leaving a bouquet with a concierge is the standard fallback, and it costs most of the effect, because the flowers sit downstairs for hours and arrive with no moment attached to them.

Collecting the bouquet yourself and handing it over in the evening remains the most reliable route. Keep it cool until then, away from radiators and direct sun on a windowsill.

Early slots in Singapore tend to close about a week before the date, and unusual colours go earlier still. If the plan involves a specific variety rather than simply red roses, the order wants to exist in the system before February starts, whichever part of Singapore it has to reach.
