Peony delivery in Rome: varieties, wedding season and the "marshmallow" bud rule

In Rome the peony is a celebration flower. Full, fragrant, lavish without trying too hard, it sits just as well at a wedding on a Roman villa as in a quiet kitchen bouquet in Trastevere. There is one catch: the peony dislikes heat, and Rome's summer is dry and scorching. So its season in the catalogue is short and bright, and Romans wait for it the way they wait for the first cherries.

This category covers single-variety bouquets, mixed compositions with roses and eucalyptus, hat boxes and large baskets for celebrations. Supply comes from European glasshouses — Dutch above all, through the Aalsmeer auction — and, in the off-season, from Chilean and New Zealand plantations. That keeps the peony in the catalogue almost year-round.

The main varieties in the catalogue

Each peony variety has its own job — from a wedding arch to an intimate "thinking of you." They differ in bud shape, shade, scent and vase life.

  • Sarah Bernhardt — a pastel-pink double bud up to 18 cm, with a honeyed, vanilla-tinged scent. A 1906 classic that works in any context: wedding, birthday, business gift.
  • Karl Rosenfield — a dense dark-red peony with saturated colour. It sits well in autumn and winter interiors with warm, wine-toned accents.
  • Festiva Maxima — white with a crimson fleck at the heart. One of the most photogenic varieties, a favourite of wedding photographers.
  • Coral Charm — shifts from coral-orange as it opens to a creamy peach in full bloom. One of the trend varieties of the 2020s.
  • Duchesse de Nemours — soft white with a cream centre and a light vanilla scent. For refined romance and nude palettes.
  • Itoh hybrids (Bartzella, Cora Louise) — a cross between herbaceous and tree peony. Larger, longer-flowering, lasting 10–12 days in the vase. For premium gifts and wedding work.

Cut stage, and why it matters

The key rule when buying peonies is the "marshmallow" stage: a coloured bud that is still soft to the touch — press it and it springs back like a marshmallow. A bud like this opens in one to two days and lasts seven to nine. A hard green one may never open; a fully open one lasts two to three days at most.

Every one of our lots is hand-selected on this criterion: only "marshmallow" buds go out for delivery. For a recipient in Rome that means a full flowering cycle, not the final fading stage.

Seasonality and logistics

The peony's natural peak in Europe is late April to June. In that short window Dutch lots are at their freshest and most affordable, and that is when the peony reaches most Roman weddings. From July to February, supply comes from the southern hemisphere (Chile, New Zealand) — the price is 1.5 to 2 times higher, but the longevity and quality hold up.

For weddings and anniversaries we match the delivery date to the expected moment of opening. A peony at a celebration should greet the guests in full bloom, not as a closed bud — and that takes precise timing. Dutch lots come through the Aalsmeer auction and reach Rome by air via Fiumicino.

"A peony isn't a flower for an impulse buy. If you want to make an impression at a villa wedding in Lazio, order three to four days ahead and let the bud open at the recipient's home. And protect it from the heat: in April and May that's easy, but by June, under the Roman sun, a peony opens in a day."

Delivery specifics in Rome

Rome has a Mediterranean climate: mild, rainy winters and hot, dry summers at +30 to +33 °C, climbing higher in a scirocco heatwave. For the peony, heat and direct sun are the main enemies: they speed up opening and shorten the cycle. So in summer bouquets travel with cooling inserts and are delivered in the cooler hours, and the best season for the peony is April to June, before the city is gripped by the heat.

We deliver peonies across all districts of Rome: Centro Storico (Pantheon, Tridente), Trastevere, Monti, Prati, Testaccio, Parioli, Trieste, Salario, Nomentano, Esquilino, Flaminio, Ostiense, Garbatella, Aventino, Pigneto, San Lorenzo, EUR and Borgo. Payment is in euro (€, EUR). Peak dates: Festa della Mamma (Mother's Day, the second Sunday of May), San Valentino (14 February), Festa della Donna (8 March) and the late-spring wedding season. Peonies sell out especially fast for Mother's Day — order seven to ten days ahead.

Home care

On arrival, re-cut the stems at 45°, strip the leaves below the waterline and place in a tall vase with cool water. Change the water every two days. Keep away from fruit, direct sun and the AC draught — ethylene and heat cut a peony's life in half.

A Rome flat gets genuinely hot in summer, and for the peony that means faster opening and a shorter cycle. Keep the bouquet in the coolest part of the home, away from a south-facing window and the balcony door. The fragrant varieties (Sarah Bernhardt, Duchesse de Nemours) open best at a moderate +18 to +20 °C — the scent becomes clearer and lasts longer.
