Peony delivery in Oslo: varieties, a short northern summer and the marshmallow-bud rule

The peony suits the Norwegian taste well. Full, fragrant, lavish without trying too hard, it matches both the look of a Scandinavian wedding and a quiet domestic koselig. In Oslo the peony has become one of the flowers of the season: large, photogenic and longer-lasting in the vase than it appears. It dresses tables at wedding venues along the Oslofjord and at country estates outside the city.

This category covers single-variety bouquets, mixed compositions with roses and eucalyptus, hat boxes and large baskets for celebrations. Supply runs through the Royal FloraHolland auction from European glasshouses; in the brief local season from southern Norwegian fields; and out of season from Chilean and New Zealand plantations. That keeps the peony in the catalogue almost year-round.

The main varieties in the catalogue

Each peony variety has its job — from a wedding arch to an intimate note from the heart. They differ in bud shape, shade, scent and vase life.

  • Sarah Bernhardt — a pastel-pink double bud up to 18 cm, with a honeyed scent and a note of vanilla. A 1906 classic that works in any context: wedding, birthday, business gift.
  • Karl Rosenfield — a dense dark-red peony with saturated colour. Sits well in autumn and winter interiors with warm, wine-toned accents.
  • Festiva Maxima — white with a crimson fleck at the heart. One of the most photogenic varieties, a favourite of wedding photographers.
  • Coral Charm — shifts from coral-orange as it opens to creamy peach in full bloom. One of the trend varieties of the 2020s.
  • Duchesse de Nemours — soft white with a cream centre and a light vanilla scent. For refined romance and nude Scandinavian palettes.
  • Itoh hybrids (Bartzella, Cora Louise) — a cross of herbaceous and tree peony. Larger and longer-flowering, lasting 10–12 days in the vase. For premium gifts and wedding work.

Cut stage and why it matters

The key rule when buying peonies is the marshmallow stage. A coloured but still soft bud: squeeze it between your fingers and it springs back like a marshmallow. Such a bud opens in one to two days and lasts seven to nine. A hard green one may never open; a fully open one lasts two to three days at most.

Every batch of ours is hand-selected on this criterion: only marshmallow-stage buds go into a shipment. For the recipient in Oslo that means a full flowering cycle, not the final fading stage.

Seasonality and logistics

The natural peony season in Norway is very short — late June and July, when field peonies bloom in the south of the country. Summer here is sparing with warmth, and the local window lasts a matter of weeks. From August to May, supply comes from the southern hemisphere (Chile, New Zealand) — the cost is 1.5 to 2 times higher, but the vase life and quality hold up. Dutch consignments travel from Aalsmeer by refrigerated lorry, about 1,300 km and a day to a day and a half on the road, with customs on entry into Norway.

For weddings and anniversaries we coordinate the delivery date with the expected moment of opening. A peony at a celebration should greet guests in full bloom, not as a closed bud — and that takes precise timing.

"A peony is not a flower for an impulse buy. If you want to make an impression at a wedding outside Oslo, order three to four days ahead and let the bud open at the recipient's home. A fresh closed peony is a promise that keeps the next day."

Delivery specifics in Oslo

Oslo has a continental climate: a real winter with snow and temperatures around −3 to −7 °C, and mild summers of +20 to +22 °C. The peony dislikes heat, so Oslo's coolness rather suits it — flowering lasts longer. The main concern in winter is not heat but frost on the way: bouquets travel in thermal bags, the wrapping protects them, and in a hard frost the courier hands the peonies to the recipient in person. The best season for the peony is late spring and early summer.

We deliver peonies across all districts of Oslo: Sentrum, Grünerløkka, Frogner, St. Hanshaugen, Sagene, Gamle Oslo, Majorstuen, Bjørvika, Grønland, Nordstrand, Ullern and Aker Brygge. Payment is in Norwegian kroner (kr, NOK). Peak dates: Morsdag (Norway's Mother's Day, the second Sunday of February), Valentinsdag (14 February), Påske (Easter) and konfirmasjon season in May. Peonies sell out especially fast for the February dates — order seven to ten days ahead.

Home care

On arrival, re-cut the stems at 45°, strip the leaves below the waterline and place in a tall vase with cool water. Change the water every two days. Keep away from fruit, radiators and direct sun — ethylene and heat halve a peony's life.

Norwegian flats are heated to +22–24 °C in winter, which for a peony means faster opening and a shortened cycle. Keep the bouquet in the coolest part of the home, ideally by a bedroom window. The fragrant varieties (Sarah Bernhardt, Duchesse de Nemours) open best at a moderate +18–20 °C — the scent comes through clearer and lasts longer.
