Protea behaves like a branch and looks like a sculpture
Protea reached the cut flower trade from South Africa and still registers as exotic wherever it turns up. The bloom is large and dense, ringed by stiff bracts, and its texture has more in common with timber than with anything in a garden border.
Everything else follows from that. The stem is woody, the leaves are leathery, the head is heavy. A protea bouquet does not shed, does not crease and is largely indifferent to a long journey. It does need a different vase.
Setting it up properly
The weight sits high, so a light vase tips over at the first knock. Use something heavy with a wide base and the problem disappears.
Recut with secateurs rather than scissors. Scissors crush a woody stem, and a crushed stem stops drinking within a day. Fill the water to a middling level and change it every few days.
One trait gets mistaken for damage. The lower leaves darken along the edges over time. That is a normal response to being cut, and the fix is to pull the darkened leaves off rather than to complain about the flower.

Protea is bought by the stem. It works alone and rarely benefits from a crowd.
