Protea behaves like a branch and looks like a sculpture

Large protea bloom with stiff bracts on a woody stem

Protea reached the cut flower trade from South Africa and still registers as exotic wherever it turns up. The bloom is large and dense, ringed by stiff bracts, and its texture has more in common with timber than with anything in a garden border.

Everything else follows from that. The stem is woody, the leaves are leathery, the head is heavy. A protea bouquet does not shed, does not crease and is largely indifferent to a long journey. It does need a different vase.

Setting it up properly

The weight sits high, so a light vase tips over at the first knock. Use something heavy with a wide base and the problem disappears.

Recut with secateurs rather than scissors. Scissors crush a woody stem, and a crushed stem stops drinking within a day. Fill the water to a middling level and change it every few days.

One trait gets mistaken for damage. The lower leaves darken along the edges over time. That is a normal response to being cut, and the fix is to pull the darkened leaves off rather than to complain about the flower.

Quantity and company

Protea is bought by the stem. It works alone and rarely benefits from a crowd.

1. One stem in a tall narrow vase is a finished arrangement for a shelf or a side table. 2. Three read as a serious gift and are priced accordingly. 3. Five or more is unusual outside interiors work and photography.

In a mixed bouquet, protea is the focal point and everything else has to accept that. Eucalyptus, dried material, grasses and large foliage hold their own beside it. Small delicate flowers simply vanish next to the scale of the head.

A protea is not a table decoration. It is an object that sits in a room and gets looked at on its own terms.

Who it suits, and what happens next

The gift reads as a considered choice rather than a default congratulation. It goes to men, to designers, to people with spare interiors, to housewarmings and professional milestones, and to offices where appearance matters and fragrance is unwelcome.

Protea also has a second life. It dries standing in the vase with the water removed and keeps its shape and most of its colour for months. Plenty of buyers discover this by accident and then order it deliberately.

For delivery across Monaco it is about as robust as cut flowers get. The rigid structure of the head takes stairs, heat and a long route without complaint.

JFLOO sells protea by the stem and inside exotic arrangements. For a gift that does not wilt so much as move into a dried phase, it is one of the most reliable things in the catalogue.
