Flower baskets: two questions decide which one you order

Small flower basket standing on a kitchen table

Everything in this section divides along two lines. How big it is, and what is planted in it. Answer those two and the choice narrows to a handful of arrangements, which is a far better way round than scrolling through photographs and hoping one of them feels right.

The first question is about a room you probably have not seen.

Size answers the room, not the occasion

A basket does not travel after it arrives. It goes onto whatever surface is free and it stays there, so the surface has to exist before the order is placed. A small arrangement wants a bedside cabinet, a desk corner, a kitchen table that is also used for eating. A floor version wants a metre of clear space near a doorway or a wall, and in a one-room flat that space is usually already occupied by something.

So the useful thing to establish is not the recipient's favourite colour. It is whether anyone will have to move the arrangement, and how it gets through the front door.

Occasions push people the wrong way here. A big anniversary suggests a big basket, but if the celebration happens in a restaurant and the recipient then carries the gift home on public transport, the large version becomes a problem for the rest of the evening.

Contents answer the lifespan

The second division is what goes into the foam. A single-variety basket behaves predictably: the flowers open together, they tire together, and the arrangement has one clear ending. A mixed one holds a range of lifespans in the same block of foam, which means it looks generous on day one and then thins out unevenly as the shorter-lived heads go first.

Neither is better. They fail differently, and it is worth knowing which failure you are buying.

Seasonal contents change the sum as well. Spring stems are soft and drink heavily, autumn material includes dried elements that never wilt at all, and a basket built around branches and berries keeps a recognisable shape long after the fresh part has gone over.

The construction underneath both

Stems sit in soaked florist foam held in a lined tray, so there is no vase, no cutting and nothing for the recipient to do on arrival. Water is topped up at the edge every day or two until the surface stops taking it. That is the whole routine.

Florist checking a mixed flower basket before delivery

Two consequences follow. Stems are cut short to hold their angle, so nothing can be rehoused in a vase later, and soaked foam is heavy, so the arrangement is carried underneath with both hands rather than by a handle that was woven for looks.

When to choose something else

If the gift will be handed over on a stage, photographed in someone's arms or carried through a long evening, a wrapped bouquet does that job and a basket does not. If the recipient enjoys arranging flowers, a basket takes that away from them entirely, since the composition is finished before it leaves the workshop.

The format earns its place in the opposite situation. Nobody at home, an office reception, a ward, a hotel room, a house where the kitchen is still in boxes.

For a recipient in Monaco the practical advantage is that flower baskets survive a wait. Left with a neighbour or on a reception desk for an hour, they are in exactly the state they were when the courier set them down.
