Peonies with delivery in Mexico City: varieties, two import seasons, and the cut stage

The peony is a flower that needs no explanation. A full, globe-shaped bud, dense layers of petals, a light honey scent — that's enough for a bouquet to speak without a card. Mexico City knows how to value the gesture: the city lives on flowers, but the peony is reserved for occasions that truly matter.

The capital's paradox is that the rose grows nearby, in the State of Mexico, while the peony has to travel from far away. The peony needs a real, cold winter that the Mexican climate doesn't provide, so it isn't grown in the country. It's an honestly imported, seasonal flower. The category covers single-variety bouquets from 9 to 50 stems, mixed arrangements with roses, lisianthus, and eucalyptus, plus hatboxes for weddings and corporate orders.

The main varieties in the catalogue

Each variety solves its own task — from a classic romantic bouquet to a complex wedding arrangement. They differ in bud shape, colour range, fragrance, and vase life.

• Sarah Bernhardt — a 1906 classic, a pale-pink double bud up to 18 cm, a honey scent. A universal choice for a wedding or anniversary.
• Karl Rosenfield — a dark-red, dense peony. Suited to a dramatic wine palette.
• Festiva Maxima — white with a crimson "drop" at the centre. The most photogenic white peony, a classic of wedding work.
• Coral Charm — shifts colour from coral-peach to creamy yellow as it opens. One of the most fashionable varieties of recent years.
• Duchesse de Nemours — soft white with a cream centre, a light vanilla scent, a romantic look.
• Itoh hybrids (Bartzella, Cora Louise) — a cross of herbaceous and tree peony, blooming longer and larger than the usual sorts.

The cut stage and why it matters

The main rule when buying peonies is the "marshmallow" stage. That's a bud already coloured but still soft to the touch. If the peony springs back like a marshmallow when squeezed, it will open in 1–2 days and last 7–9. If the bud is hard and green, it may not open at all. If it's already fully open, it will last 2–3 days at most.

Every batch is hand-checked by a florist against this criterion. Only "marshmallow" buds of the right firmness go into a shipment — so the recipient sees the full bloom cycle, not the final fading stage. Two seasons and occasions

The peony reaches Mexico City in two waves. The first is the Northern Hemisphere, roughly May to June: the main cut flies in from the Netherlands and the United States. The second is the Southern Hemisphere, November to January, mostly from Chile. In those weeks the peony is at its freshest and most affordable. The rest of the year it's all but absent, and that's normal.

The May wave lands neatly on Día de las Madres — 10 May, the country's biggest flower day. For that date the peony sells out first as a premium gift for mum. Día de San Valentín in February and Día de la Mujer on 8 March fall between seasons, so a peony for them is rare and must be ordered well ahead. Mixed bouquets of peonies and garden-style roses form a class of their own: the two flowers are close in shape and complement each other in palette and vase life.

Delivery specifics

Mexico City's climate suits the peony. At 2,240 metres it's mild year-round: +20…+24°C by day, cool at night, with no pronounced heat. In such moderate weather a delicate bud holds longer than in a hot coastal city. The main challenge isn't heat but the thunderstorms from May to October: in a downpour we reinforce the packaging so the box and kraft don't get soaked. Care at home

After delivery, refresh the cut at a 45° angle, remove all leaves below the waterline, and place the peonies in a tall vase with cool water. Change the water every 2 days. Don't set them near fruit or a heater — ethylene and heat halve a peony's life.

In Mexico City's moderate climate the peony stands a good chance: watch for dry air in the dry season and direct midday sun through the window. Keep the bouquet in the coolest room, out of the beam, and mist the buds lightly once a day. On cool dry-season nights, move the vase away from any heater in use — dry warmth parches the petals.
