The rose is a special flower for north-west England. David Austin's nursery in Albrighton, Shropshire, sits barely ninety minutes' drive to the south, and it was Austin who bred the first English garden rose, Constance Spry, in 1969, setting the global taste for the cupped, garden-rose form. That proximity means a short transport leg and genuinely fresh Austin varieties in the catalogue.

Which varieties to choose

We keep three working groups in stock: large-headed Ecuadorians, classic Dutch roses, and English garden roses by David Austin. Each solves its own task — from a statement gift to a quieter romantic gesture.

• Patience, Juliet, Constance, Keira — David Austin English garden roses. Cupped, deeply petalled form, myrrh or fruity fragrance, the variety the world flies to Britain to buy. Ideal for bridal bouquets.
• Freedom, Explorer, Mondial — Ecuadorian flagships. Long 70–90 cm stems, dense buds, vase life of 10–14 days with proper care.
• Avalanche+, Red Naomi, Vendela — Dutch classics. Medium 5–7 cm buds, a deep palette, the reliable workhorse for any task.
• Spray roses — multiple blooms on a single stem, for airy compositions and smaller gifts.

Occasions and stem count

One stem is a quiet note of attention. Three is a friendly thank-you. Seven and nine read as a romantic gift. Twenty-five is a serious declaration. Fifty-one and 101 mark anniversaries, engagements, milestone birthdays.

The cool, damp regional climate lets us use open formats — baskets, hat boxes without thermal liners — for most of the year. Roses travel comfortably at +5…+15 °C. Against the Manchester rain we add a waterproof cellophane layer under the kraft wrap; the weather here turns without warning, and we plan around it.

Freshness and logistics

Dutch roses leave the Aalsmeer auction by overnight ferry or Eurotunnel, then north up the M6 — roughly a day to reach the north-west. By morning the batch passes through the New Smithfield wholesale market in Openshaw. From cut to a recipient in Didsbury or Ancoats the chain runs 2–3 days, and the bouquet still lives 10–14 days in the vase.

Ecuadorian large-heads come by air via Manchester Airport or Amsterdam, a slightly longer path of 4–6 days from plantations at 2,800 m. David Austin English roses in season (June through September) are sourced from Shropshire nurseries — the freshest rose in the catalogue.

The city has a mild, distinctly wet oceanic climate — Manchester is nicknamed the Rainy City for good reason. Winter sits at +2…+8 °C with rare, fast-melting snow; summer runs +14…+21 °C; humidity stays at 75–85% year-round across some 140 rainy days. For cut flowers that cool is, in practice, ideal — bouquets suffer from neither frost nor heatwaves. We deliver in Manchester without seasonal restrictions.

Care at home

After delivery, recut the stems at a 45° angle, strip leaves below the water line, place in a clean vase with cool water. Change the water every two days and add Chrysal or a pinch of sugar. Keep away from radiators, direct sun, and ripe fruit — ethylene cuts vase life by a third.

New-build flats in Deansgate, Ancoats, and Salford Quays often run hot in winter — underfloor heating and radiators dry buds quickly. Place the bouquet in the coolest room, usually the bedroom or a less-used corner of the living room. On the rare summer heat day, move it to the fridge overnight if room temperature exceeds +24 °C.
