Apology flowers: they stay in the room for the next ten days

Birthday flowers are looked at once, photographed and then forgotten in the corner of the kitchen. An apology bouquet is different, because the person who received it walks past it every morning and decides again each time how they feel about you. That is why condition matters here more than in almost any other occasion.

What to look at when it arrives

Freshness is easy to judge if you know where to look, and the first place is the outer ring of petals. Florists leave a couple of guard petals on a rose on purpose, and slightly bruised outer petals with a firm centre are a good sign rather than a bad one. A soft, spongy head that gives under light pressure at the base has already been in a bucket too long. Foliage tells the same story: leaves should be stiff and matt, and anything limp or yellowing at the water line has been sitting around. Stems come next, and a clean pale cut means the bouquet was made that morning, while a brown or slimy one does not.

Water clarity is the last check, and it takes a second.

How to keep it going

Recut every stem at a sharp angle, roughly two centimetres up, and do it under running water so no air is drawn into the stem. Strip any leaf that would sit below the water line, because submerged foliage rots and turns the vase cloudy within a day.

Change the water every other day rather than topping it up. Topping up leaves the bacteria where they are.

Position does the rest of the work. A vase on a sunny windowsill loses days quickly, and so does one above a radiator, since warm dry air pulls moisture out of the petals faster than the stems can replace it. The fruit bowl is the quiet killer that nobody expects: ripening fruit gives off ethylene, and flowers standing next to it age noticeably sooner.

Fresh stems bought in decent condition give you seven to fourteen days. Preserved roses in a box are the other route, and they hold for a year or more without water, which suits a situation where nobody is in the mood to fuss over a vase.

Choosing what goes in

Red roses read as a declaration and quietly change the subject. White, cream, powder pink and soft lilac say the right thing without asking for anything back, and white roses, lisianthus, hydrangea and peony-shaped varieties all sit comfortably in that register.

Scent deserves a thought. Lilies carry a heavy perfume that fills a small flat completely, and in a room where somebody is already tense that becomes a second irritant.

For a colleague or a business partner, drop the romantic register entirely and send something restrained in a box that can stand on a desk without the whole office reading it as a story.

Timing and handover

Same day beats any upgrade in size. A modest bouquet that arrives on the evening of the argument does more than a large one that turns up on Thursday, by which point the flowers look like an afterthought that took several days to organise.

Send the card with it, signed, and keep the text to two lines.
