Peony delivery in Lisbon: varieties, the wedding season and the "marshmallow" bud rule

In Lisbon the peony is a flower for occasions. Full, fragrant and lavish without trying too hard, it sits equally well at a wedding in a quinta near Sintra and in a quiet kitchen bouquet in Campo de Ourique. There is one catch: the peony dislikes heat, and a few days of the easterly Lestada turn the city into an oven. So its season in the catalogue is short and bright, and Lisboners wait for it the way they wait for the first cherries.

This category covers single-variety bouquets, mixed compositions with roses and eucalyptus, hat boxes and large baskets for celebrations. Supply runs through the MARL market from European glasshouses — Dutch above all — and, in the off-season, from Chilean and New Zealand plantations. That keeps the peony in the catalogue almost year-round.

The main varieties in the catalogue

Each peony variety answers a different brief — from a wedding arch to an intimate "thinking of you." They differ in bud shape, shade, scent and vase life.

  • Sarah Bernhardt — a pastel-pink double bud up to 18 cm, with a honeyed scent and a note of vanilla. A 1906 classic that works in any context: wedding, birthday, business gift.
  • Karl Rosenfield — a dense dark-red peony of saturated colour. Sits well in autumn and winter interiors with warm, wine-toned accents.
  • Festiva Maxima — white with a crimson "drop" at the heart. One of the most photogenic varieties, a favourite of wedding photographers.
  • Coral Charm — shifts from coral-orange as it opens to creamy peach in full bloom. One of the trend varieties of the 2020s.
  • Duchesse de Nemours — soft white with a cream centre and a light vanilla scent. For refined romance and nude palettes.
  • Itoh hybrids (Bartzella, Cora Louise) — a cross between herbaceous and tree peony. Larger, longer-flowering, lasting 10–12 days in the vase. For premium gifts and wedding work.

The cut stage and why it matters

The key rule when buying peonies is the "marshmallow" stage. A coloured bud that is still soft to the touch: press it between your fingers and it springs back like a marshmallow. Such a bud opens in one to two days and lasts 7–9. A hard, green one may not open at all; a fully open one will last two to three days at most.

Every lot of ours is hand-selected against this criterion: only "marshmallow" buds are shipped. For the recipient in Lisbon that means the full flowering cycle, not the final fading stage.

Seasonality and logistics

The peony's natural peak in Europe is late April to June. In that short window Dutch lots are at their freshest and most affordable, and that is when the peony reaches most Lisbon weddings. From July to February supply comes from the southern hemisphere (Chile, New Zealand) — the cost is 1.5 to 2 times higher, but durability and quality do not suffer.

For weddings and anniversaries we align the delivery date with the expected moment of opening. A peony at a celebration should greet the guests in full bloom, not as a closed bud — and that takes precise timing. Dutch lots come through the Aalsmeer auction and reach the MARL market by air via Humberto Delgado Airport or by refrigerated road through Spain.

"A peony is not a flower for an impulse buy. If you want to make an impression at a wedding in a quinta near Sintra, order three to four days ahead and let the bud open at the recipient's home. And guard it from heat: in May that's easy, but once the Lestada blows the peony opens before your eyes."

Delivery specifics in Lisbon

Lisbon's climate is mild and Atlantic: a warm, wet winter with almost no frost, a dry summer of +28 to +30 °C, and brief spikes past +35 °C when the easterly Lestada blows. For the peony heat is the chief enemy: it speeds up opening and shortens the cycle. So during heatwaves bouquets travel with cooling inserts and are delivered in the cooler hours, while the best season for the peony is April to June, before the city heats up.

We deliver peonies across all districts of Lisbon: Baixa, Chiado, Alfama, Bairro Alto, Príncipe Real, Avenida da Liberdade, Estrela, Lapa, Campo de Ourique, Graça, Alcântara, Belém, Restelo, Parque das Nações, Areeiro, Alvalade, Benfica and Lumiar. Payment is in euro (€, EUR). Peak dates: Dia da Mãe (Mother's Day, the first Sunday of May), Dia dos Namorados (14 February), Santo António (13 June) and the late-spring wedding season. Peonies sell out fast for Mother's Day — order 7 to 10 days ahead.

Home care

After delivery re-cut the stems at 45°, strip the leaves below the waterline and place in a tall vase with cool water. Change the water every two days. Keep them away from fruit, direct sun and the draught of the AC — ethylene and warmth halve a peony's life.

In a Lisbon flat the summer, especially during a Lestada, can get genuinely hot, and for the peony that means faster opening and a shorter cycle. Place the bouquet in the coolest part of the home, away from a south-facing window. The fragrant varieties (Sarah Bernhardt, Duchesse de Nemours) open best at a moderate +18 to +20 °C — the scent becomes clearer and longer-lasting.
