Peony delivery in Limassol: varieties, the wedding season and the "marshmallow" bud rule

On Cyprus the peony is an imported flower, and all the more coveted for it. Full, fragrant, lavish without being showy, it has become the star of Limassol weddings on the coast and at country estates in the foothills of the Troodos. It is loved for its photogenic looks and for lasting longer in the vase than you would expect. But the southern climate sets the rules: the peony cannot stand heat, and in Limassol everything comes down to season and cold chain.

This category covers single-variety bouquets, mixed arrangements with roses and eucalyptus, hat boxes and large baskets for celebrations. Supply comes through the Royal FloraHolland auction from European glasshouses, and in the off-season from Chilean and New Zealand plantations. That keeps the peony in the catalogue almost year-round.

The main varieties in the catalogue

Each peony variety has its job — from a wedding arch to an intimate "thinking of you". They differ in bud form, shade, scent and vase life.

• Sarah Bernhardt — a pastel-pink double bud up to 18 cm, honeyed scent with a note of vanilla. A 1906 classic that works in any context: wedding, birthday, business gift.
• Karl Rosenfield — a deep-red dense peony with a rich colour. Looks good in winter arrangements with warm, wine-toned accents.
• Festiva Maxima — white with a raspberry fleck at the centre. One of the most photogenic varieties, a favourite of wedding photographers.
• Coral Charm — shifts from coral-orange as it opens to creamy peach in full bloom. One of the trend varieties of the 2020s.
• Duchesse de Nemours — soft white with a cream centre and a light vanilla scent. For refined romance and bright Mediterranean palettes.
• Itoh hybrids (Bartzella, Cora Louise) — a cross of herbaceous and tree peony. Larger and longer-flowering, holding 10–12 days in the vase. For premium gifts and wedding work.

The cut stage and why it matters

The key rule when buying peonies is the "marshmallow" stage. A coloured but still soft bud: squeeze it between your fingers and it springs back like a marshmallow. Such a bud opens in one to two days and lasts seven to nine. A hard, green one may not open at all; a fully open one lasts two to three days at most.

Every one of our lots is hand-sorted by this criterion: only "marshmallow" buds go into the shipment. For a recipient in Limassol that means a full flowering cycle, not the final fading stage — which matters especially in a warm climate, where opening happens faster.

Seasonality and logistics

Cyprus does not grow peonies of its own: it is too hot and dry for them here. The European supply season is late April to June, and that is the best time for the peony in Limassol. From July to February, lots from the southern hemisphere (Chile, New Zealand) take over — the cost is 1.5 to 2 times higher, but durability and quality do not suffer.

Cyprus is an island, and the peony arrives by air. Dutch and South American lots fly in and land at Larnaca airport, about 70 km from Limassol. For weddings and anniversaries we align the delivery date with the expected moment of opening: a peony at a celebration should greet guests in full bloom, not as a closed bud.

Delivery specifics in Limassol

Limassol has a Mediterranean climate: hot dry summers of +30 to +35 °C and mild winters of +15 to +18 °C. For the peony, summer is a trial: it dislikes heat, and at high temperatures it opens fast while its cycle shortens. So the best season here is winter and spring, when it is cooler. In summer bouquets travel in chilled thermal boxes, we schedule delivery for the morning or evening, and we ask the recipient to move the flowers straight under air conditioning.

Home care

On arrival, re-cut the stems at 45°, strip the leaves below the waterline and place in a tall vase with cool water. Change the water daily. Keep away from fruit, direct sun and a hot balcony — ethylene and heat halve a peony's life.

In the Limassol heat a peony opens quickly, so keep the bouquet in the coolest part of the home, under air conditioning. The fragrant varieties (Sarah Bernhardt, Duchesse de Nemours) open best at a moderate +18 to +20 °C — the scent becomes clearer and more lasting. To slow the opening, move the bouquet to a cool room overnight.
