Peonies with delivery in Lima: varieties, two import seasons, and the cut stage

The peony is a flower that needs no explanation. A round, voluminous bud, dense layers of petals, a light honeyed scent — that is enough for a bouquet to speak without a note. Lima knows how to value such a gesture: roses come down from the mountains all year, but the peony is chosen when the occasion truly matters.

Peru does not grow the peony. It needs a real winter with cold that neither the coast nor the tropics provide. This is an honest imported, seasonal flower. The category brings together single-variety bouquets of 9 to 50 stems, mixed arrangements with roses, lisianthus, and eucalyptus, and hatboxes for weddings and corporate orders.

The main varieties in the catalogue

Each variety solves its own task — from a classic romantic bouquet to a complex wedding arrangement. They differ in bud shape, colour range, fragrance, and vase life.

  • Sarah Bernhardt — a 1906 classic, a pale-pink double bud up to 18 cm, with a honeyed scent. A versatile choice for a wedding or an anniversary.
  • Karl Rosenfield — a dark-red, dense peony. Suited to a dramatic wine palette.
  • Festiva Maxima — white with a crimson "drop" at the centre. The most photogenic white peony, a classic of wedding floristry.
  • Coral Charm — shifts colour from coral-peach to creamy yellow as it opens. One of the most fashionable varieties of recent years.
  • Duchesse de Nemours — soft white with a creamy centre, a light vanilla scent, a romantic look.
  • Itoh hybrids (Bartzella, Cora Louise) — a cross between herbaceous and tree peony, blooming longer and larger than the usual kinds.

The cut stage and why it matters

The main rule when buying peonies is the "marshmallow" stage. This is a coloured bud that is still soft to the touch. If the peony "springs back" like a marshmallow when squeezed, it will open in 1–2 days and last 7–9 days. If the bud is hard and green, it may not open at all. If it is already fully open, it will last 2–3 days at most.

Every batch passes a florist's hand check against this criterion. Only "marshmallow" buds of the right firmness are shipped — so the recipient sees the full bloom cycle, not the final fading stage. If you need open peonies for a specific date, tell us at the order and we'll choose a batch with the right lead time.

Two seasons and occasions

The peony reaches Lima in two waves. The first is the Northern Hemisphere, roughly May to June: the main cut flies in from the Netherlands and Europe. The second is the Southern Hemisphere, November to January, mostly from neighbouring Chile. In these weeks the peony is at its freshest and most affordable. The rest of the year it is almost absent, and that is normal.

The May wave lands neatly on Día de la Madre — the second Sunday of May, the country's main floral peak. For that date the peony is the first to sell out. San Valentín in February and Día de la Mujer on 8 March fall at the end of the southern season, so the peony may still be around, but it should be ordered well ahead. Mixed bouquets with peonies and garden-type roses form a class of their own: the two flowers are close in shape and complement each other in palette and vase life.

"The peony doesn't forgive haste. If you want to impress, order 3–4 days ahead and let the bud open in the recipient's room. And remember: in Lima this is an imported flower of two short seasons. A freshly delivered closed peony is an investment in the moment, not the moment itself."

Delivery specifics

Lima's climate is rather kind to the peony, but with its own traps. Summer (December–April) is warm and sunny, +24…+29°C — in the heat a delicate bud lasts less, so we move the summer batch under cold and keep it out of the sun. Winter (June–October) is cool and grey, with the sea fog called garúa and high humidity — here the risk is different: damp and mould on the dense petals. Delivery in Lima is handled carefully, holding the cold from warehouse to door.

We cover the key districts: Miraflores, San Isidro, Barranco, San Borja, Santiago de Surco, La Molina, Magdalena, Jesús María, Lince, Pueblo Libre, and San Miguel. Prices in the catalogue are in Peruvian soles (PEN, S/), paid by card online. The season is short, so for Día de la Madre order 3–4 days ahead — the peak dates sell out early.

Care at home

After delivery, refresh the cut at a 45° angle, remove all leaves below the waterline, and place the peonies in a tall vase with cool water. Change the water every 2 days. Don't keep them near fruit or a heater — ethylene and heat halve a peony's life.

In Lima the peony has two enemies by season: summer sun through the window and the damp of the winter garúa. In summer keep the bouquet in the coolest room, out of the direct beam. In the damp season don't mist the buds and ventilate the room — in humid air dense petals are prone to mould. Fresh cool water and dry air around it are all the peony needs in Lima.
