Tulips with delivery in Hong Kong: varieties, Dutch supply, and brightness for New Year

Hong Kong has no tulip spring of its own — the subtropics give them no open-air season. Yet the city loves the tulip as a mark of bright spirits: it sits on hotel reception desks in Tsim Sha Tsui, in Central offices, and goes out as a gift for holidays when you want clean, simple colour. Here the tulip reads not as a seasonal flower but as an imported, festive one, and demand for it holds almost year-round.

The category covers single-variety bouquets from 11 to 51 stems, mixed spring arrangements, and gift boxes with tulips, ranunculus, and narcissi. For Lunar New Year, bright mixed armfuls are especially popular — several shades in one bouquet look more festive than a single colour.

Which varieties to choose

Dutch growers release hundreds of tulip varieties each year. We select those that combine stem strength, long vase life, and an interesting look — criteria that matter especially when shipping into Hong Kong's heat and humidity.

  • Strong Gold — golden yellow, a classic tulip on a tall, even stem. Pairs well with white and fresh-green spring arrangements.
  • Red Impression — deep red, large bud, a very sturdy stem. Red is the colour of luck, a frequent choice for Lunar New Year.
  • White Dreamland — pure white, slightly matte. An elegant neutral base for mixed bouquets.
  • Purple Flag — rich purple. For those after a colour beyond the red-yellow-white palette.
  • Queensday — pink-and-orange bicolour. A decorative group with a slightly fuller bud.
  • Black Hero — deep dark-purple, almost black, double tulip. An unusual choice for modern Wan Chai and Central interiors.

Occasions and seasonality

The tulip's main peak in Hong Kong is Lunar New Year (農曆新年, late January or February): bright colours are read as a good omen for the year ahead. Next comes Valentine's Day (情人節, 14 February), where the tulip is often taken as a softer alternative to the rose. For Mother's Day in May and for corporate displays, tulips are ordered year-round.

Tulips are less often given as single stems — formats of 15, 25, and 51 are more typical. Keep the Chinese number symbolism in mind: fours are avoided, while eight and nine are read as auspicious. And mind the colour: for romantic and New Year occasions, red and pink tones are the usual choice, while white arrangements suit weddings and ceremonies better.

Freshness and logistics

The tulips in our catalogue are of Dutch origin, from the Royal FloraHolland auctions in Aalsmeer and Naaldwijk. Hong Kong has no tulip field of its own, so the entire volume arrives by air through Chek Lap Kok Airport (HKG) under deep refrigeration. Tulips arrive in closed buds — standard practice that extends freshness.

Until assembly, bouquets are held in cold storage at +2…+4°C. They finish opening at the recipient's. From field to a Hong Kong vase, a tulip travels farther than a "neighbouring" Yunnan rose, so we're especially strict about freshness and the cold chain: warm, humid air opens the bud within hours.

"The tulip is the most heat-sensitive flower we handle, and Hong Kong is unkind to it: heat and humidity open the bud in a flash. For a large order I always advise delivery the evening before, not the morning of the event. And don't keep tulips under the air conditioning — a dry draught finishes them off."

Delivery specifics in Hong Kong

Hong Kong has a humid subtropical climate, and for the tulip it's the most demanding of our flowers. In summer (May to September), +28…+33°C with humidity up to 90% — in such weather the tulip opens and ages especially fast, so it's ordered less then and moved only under refrigeration. Winter (December–February) is mild, +15…+20°C — the ideal time, and it conveniently coincides with the New Year peak. In typhoon season, delivery is suspended at Signal No. 8 or above.

We deliver across all districts of Hong Kong: Central, Admiralty, Wan Chai, and Causeway Bay on Hong Kong Island; Tsim Sha Tsui, Mong Kok, and Kowloon Tong in Kowloon; Sha Tin, Tsuen Wan, and Sai Kung in the New Territories. We take corporate orders for offices, restaurants, and hotels year-round. Payment is in Hong Kong dollars (HK$, HKD). For Lunar New Year and Valentine's Day, order 5–7 days ahead.

Care at home

Tulips keep growing in the vase — stems lengthen by 3–5 cm after going into water and bend toward the light, so it helps to turn the bouquet. Cut at a 45° angle, remove the lower leaves, and change the water daily: tulips are very sensitive to bacteria. A cool room at +15…+18°C extends their life to 8–10 days.

Don't add anything extra to the water — clean, cool water with regular changes works better than folk remedies. On hot, humid days keep the tulips in the coolest room, away from the air-conditioning airflow, and move them to the refrigerator overnight to slow opening. Message our manager and we'll help match the colour and stem count to the occasion and budget.
