Roses delivered in Helsinki: Dutch freshness meets Finnish restraint

Helsinki is a city of sea, granite and northern design. People here value plain, honest things: a clean line, pale wood, a glass Aalto vase on the windowsill. In winter the day is short and dusk comes early, so a bouquet on the table becomes part of kodikkuus — the Finnish knack for making a home cosy. A rose fits this rhythm easily, both as a quiet token and as a grand gesture.

This category gathers single-variety bouquets, mixed arrangements, spray roses, kraft-wrapped armfuls and hat boxes. Formats run from a compact bunch of 7 stems to a statement of 51 and 101. Finland is in the EU, so Dutch roses arrive with no customs — a shorter route and a fresher bud.

Which roses people choose in Helsinki

The main flow comes from the Netherlands via the Royal FloraHolland auction — classic large-headed varieties and peony-style hybrids. Ecuadorian lots with extra-long stems arrive less often. Here's the breakdown by group.

  • Freedom, Red Naomi — the red classics. Freedom: deep crimson, firm bud, stem 60–80 cm, lasts 10–14 days. Red Naomi: velvety and fragrant. For anniversaries and romance.
  • Avalanche+, Mondial — white and cream Dutch varieties. A neutral base for mixed bouquets and wedding work.
  • Juliet, Patience — David Austin garden roses with a cupped bud and a scent of myrrh and peach. For weddings and a gift "for the soul".
  • Tiffany, Sweet Avalanche — powdery pink shades. They hit the Finnish taste for a muted palette exactly.
  • Explorer, Topaz — Ecuadorian varieties with stems 80–100 cm. For large armfuls and corporate gifts.
  • Spray roses (bush) — several buds per stem. For airy arrangements and small everyday bouquets.

Occasion and number of stems

In Finland you give an odd number of flowers — an even count is brought only to funerals. Everyone here knows the rule, and it's not one to break.

A distinctly Finnish tradition is roses for graduates. In late May, at ylioppilas, yesterday's school-leavers put on their white caps, and a red or white rose becomes the gift of the day. One to three stems make a light token, five to seven suit a date, and large bouquets from 15 are for anniversaries and declarations.

Freshness and logistics

Dutch roses leave the Aalsmeer auction and travel north in refrigerated trucks through Germany, Denmark and Sweden, then by ferry across the Baltic. Because Finland is in the EU, there's no customs clearance at the border, so the route is shorter than, say, to Norway. From cut to vase it takes 3–4 days, and with proper care roses last 7–14 days.

Ecuadorian varieties arrive by air via European flower hubs. The journey is longer, but the dense bud and long stem are worth it — the gift of the cold high-altitude climate on plantations at 2800–3000 m.

"A Finn takes flowers calmly but is fussy about quality: they look at the bud, feel the stem, ask where the lot is from. Winter is real here, and if you carry a rose through the frost, the cold chain and warm packing aren't a service — they're an obligation."

Delivery specifics in Helsinki

Winter in Helsinki is the real thing: snow, temperatures around −5 to −10 °C and lower on cold nights, with a damp wind off the Baltic. Summer is mild, +18 to +22 °C. The main risk to cut flowers here is frost: in the cold a bud is nipped within minutes. So in winter roses travel in thermal bags, and in hard frost the courier won't leave a bouquet at the door without the recipient.

We deliver roses across Helsinki to every district: Kamppi, Kallio, Töölö, Punavuori, Eira, Kruununhaka, Katajanokka, Ullanlinna, Lauttasaari, Munkkiniemi, Pasila and Herttoniemi. Payment in euros (€, EUR). Peak dates: Ystävänpäivä (Friend's Day, 14 February — in Finland it's celebrated more broadly than just for couples), Äitienpäivä (Mother's Day, the second Sunday of May), Vappu (1 May), ylioppilas (graduations in late May), Joulu (Christmas) and Itsenäisyyspäivä (Independence Day, 6 December). For the spring dates order a week ahead, for the rest 3–5 days.

Care at home

Right after delivery, refresh the cut at a 45° angle, ideally under water, and strip the leaves below the waterline. Put the roses in a clean vase with cool water, add a sachet of flower food (Chrysal) or a pinch of sugar. Change the water every 2 days.

Finnish flats are heated to +21 to +23 °C in winter — borderline for roses. If the bouquet has come in from the frost, let it stand for an hour in a cool hallway without unwrapping it. Keep roses away from the radiator and from ripe fruit: ethylene cuts a cut flower's life by about a third. Roses suit almost any occasion — message the manager and we'll help pick the variety, colour and count for your need and budget.
