Eid al-Adha: restraint is most of the brief

The register of these days is family hospitality rather than display. Houses stay open, relatives and neighbours come and go, and an arrangement that shouts across the room works against the mood of the place it was sent to. Quiet work fits, and quiet work is harder to build than a bright one.

The palette, in practice

There is more than one white on a florist's bench, and the difference shows in a lit room. A cold, blue-leaning white looks clinical against warm walls and lamplight, while ivory and cream sit comfortably next to wood, ceramic and gold-rimmed tableware. Because the colour range is narrow, the interest has to come from texture: a smooth rose head beside the ruffled edge of a lisianthus, a rough olive leaf against glossy ruscus. Greenery here is structure rather than filler, and eucalyptus outlasts most of the flowers it is arranged with. A piece built this way still looks composed on the third day, when a mixed bright bouquet has started to fall apart in the middle.

Deep red on its own is best left for another occasion. It reads as a romantic gesture and lands oddly in a family setting, whatever the sender intended.

Scent, at a table that is already laid

Food is the centre of these days, and flowers that compete with it are a nuisance. Lilies fill a room within the hour and their pollen marks a light cloth permanently. Freesia and hyacinth are gentler but still noticeable in a small sitting room with the windows shut.

Roses, chrysanthemums and lisianthus stay effectively silent, which is what a laid table wants.

Scale and where it will stand

Ask where the arrangement is going before deciding how big it should be. A piece for a sideboard or a hall console can have height, since nothing has to be seen over it. A piece for the table where people eat has to stay below eye level, which in practice means about the height of a hand, in a bowl or a box rather than a vase.

Anything that sheds is a poor choice for a house with children moving through it all day.

Something for the older members of the family

Cut stems put the work on the person who receives them: unwrap, trim, find a vase, change the water. In a house that is feeding twenty people, that job gets postponed and the flowers suffer for it.

An arrangement built on wet foam in a box, a handled basket, or a potted orchid or azalea avoids the whole problem. The potted plant has the longest tail of the three, because it is still in the room a month later and everyone remembers who brought it.

Ordering ahead

The date moves with the lunar calendar and falls on different days each year, so plan against this year's date rather than a month. Demand arrives in a short burst around it. Large-headed white roses go first, then white chrysanthemums, then eucalyptus, which is the quiet shortage nobody anticipates because it is bought as greenery rather than as a flower.
