Living with an oversized bouquet, and the build that makes it possible

Oversized designer bouquet standing on the floor against a wall in a Dubai apartment

The honeymoon with a piece this size lasts about an evening. The practical questions start immediately afterwards, and they arrive in the same order every time. None of them is difficult, but all of them are easier when somebody thought about them before the courier rang the bell.

Almost no home owns a vessel that will take a piece of this size intact. The usual outcome is that it gets divided between several containers on the first night, or dropped whole into a bucket while somebody thinks. Both of those are reasonable. What causes trouble is leaving it wrapped on a table until the following evening, because a bound mass in warm air loses more overnight than most people expect.

"Every one of these has a frame inside it that nobody will ever see. The frame is what decides whether the thing still looks like itself when the door opens."

— JFLOO florist

Placement is the next question. On a table an oversized piece dominates a room and blocks every sightline across it, which is why these arrangements end up on the floor against a wall or in a hallway corner, where height works for them. Somewhere out of the sun matters more here than anywhere else, since a large mass warms through and does not cool down again quickly.

Water is the quiet failure point. A tightly bound mass drinks unevenly, because the outer stems reach the bottom of the vessel while the inner ones hang short. By the second day part of the arrangement is standing in nothing at all, and the flowers that fail first are in the middle where nobody is looking. Splitting the piece and recutting every stem individually is worth doing on the first evening. It means giving up the shape the florist built, which is exactly why people put it off until the shape has gone anyway.

That construction was never decorative.

What is inside a piece this size

At this volume there is always a frame, a dense spiral or a foam base under the flowers. Lower stems crush under the weight of everything above them during transport otherwise, and the damage happens in the car rather than at the door. A build without internal support arrives as a heap that photographs like a hedge.

Proportion has to be decided at the bench. Large forms need a deliberate outline, a point where the mass breaks, and lines of foliage or branch material that give the eye a route through the volume.

Balance separates a good build from a merely heavy one. The binding point sits low enough that the piece can stand on the floor without tipping, and the weight distributes so that one person can lift it without the whole thing rotating in their hands. That last detail is worth more than any variety on the order.

What the city adds

Oversized designer bouquets in Dubai meet a summer running to 40 °C with coastal humidity behind it, and a piece this size is exposed on the short stretches: the walk from the car, the wait at a barrier, the corridor from a service lift. Those minutes do more damage than the drive itself. We use insulated packing through the hot months and keep the piece out of direct sun at every one of those points. Delivery across the city takes 2 to 4 hours and we work from 9 AM to 10 PM.

Dutch roses at 60-90 cm and Ecuadorian roses up to 120 cm give this format its height, and greenhouse tulips and chrysanthemums from the UAE hold a firm head through the handover. Dutch peonies come in outside their own season and sit inside the mass, protected by everything around them.

Orders start from 250 AED, with payment by Apple Pay or cash to the courier.

Tell us the room the piece is going to live in. If there is nothing to stand it in, we build it on a foam base instead, and the piece arrives ready to be put down and left alone.
