Everything about peonies — varieties, season, how to pick a fresh bouquet

Peonies are the most contradictory flower in our work. On one hand — the number one request for weddings and romantic gifts. On the other — the most capricious in care and the shortest by season.

Every May the shop has a queue of couples who "want a peony bouquet." And every time we repeat the same things: variety, bud tightness, temperature, lifespan.

This is the full guide. Eight years working with peonies, thousands of stems through our hands. What we wish every customer knew before walking into the shop.

When is peony season

This is the main question — and the answer confuses almost everyone.

Local peonies (main season in Europe / Russia): May – first half of June. That's the six-week window when peonies are cheapest and most beautiful.

Dutch peonies (imports): available from late April to August, but quality drops sharply after mid-June. By August the supply almost disappears.

Chilean / New Zealand (southern hemisphere): available October to February. "Winter peonies," very expensive ($8–11 per stem), often weak quality.

Local (warm-climate growers, e.g. southern Europe / California / Krasnodar): late April to early June. The most beautiful, but supply is small.

The main tip: buy peonies in May or the first half of June.

What varieties exist

There are over 5,000 peony varieties globally, but roughly 20–25 work in mass retail. The most common:

Cream and white

• Sarah Bernhardt — the classic of classics. Large, cream, with a soft pink cast. The most versatile.
• Bowl of Cream — pure cream, no pink, dense petals.
• Duchesse de Nemours — white with a greenish center, very aristocratic.
• Festiva Maxima — pure white with subtle red flecks at the heart.

Pink

• Pink Vanguard — dusty pink, ideal for 2026 weddings.
• Coral Charm — coral (opens peach, then lightens).
• Eden's Perfume — bright pink, highly fragrant.
• Mons. Jules Elie — saturated pink, classic.

Red

• Karl Rosenfield — deep burgundy, velvety.
• Red Charm — scarlet, medium size.

Yellow and unusual

• Bartzella — yellow, very rare, very expensive ($10+ per stem).
• Itoh hybrids (multiple varieties) — bicolor, textured.

How to choose fresh peonies at the shop

This is critical — a peony that has been "wilting on display" will live at most 2 days.

Signs of a fresh peony

• Bud CLOSED or barely cracked open. This isn't "unripe" — it's the correct display state for a peony. It opens at home over 1–3 days.
• Bud feels firm — like an apple, not a tomato
• Petals without brown edges — even a hint of brown means the peony has been on display 24+ hours
• Leaves bright green, not yellowing
• Stem strong, not soft or waterlogged

Signs of an old peony (do NOT buy)

• Bud fully open — it will wilt within a day
• Petals soft to a light touch
• Brown edges on even one petal
• A rotting smell from the vase water
• Stem bends under the weight of the head

The main trick

Ask the florist to hold the peony vertical. If the bud doesn't sag under its own weight — it's fresh. If the head droops, the peony has been water-starved for 12+ hours and will fade quickly.

How long a peony lives

This is the harshest part of working with peonies. Realistic lifespan:

• Best possible care: 5–7 days
• Normal care: 3–4 days
• In summer heat (August): 2 days

"Peonies last two weeks" is a marketing lie. Never. Even in our own homes, with all our knowledge, peonies live eight days maximum.

How to extend a peony's life

Six techniques that actually work:

1. Re-cut under water

Immediately after buying — fresh 45° cut under a running tap or submerged in a filled sink. Critical: otherwise air enters the capillaries.

2. Flower food in every water change

One sachet of Chrysal (or equivalent) per liter of water. Peonies drink a lot — they need feeding.

3. Cold water with ice

Peonies love cold. Fill the vase with cold water plus 2–3 ice cubes.

4. Overnight in the cold

Before bed, move the vase to the coolest place in the house — a balcony at +10 °C, the bathroom floor, a windowsill against winter glass. Adds 2–3 days to the bouquet.

5. Opening tight buds

If a peony arrived as a "tight ball" and won't open — gently massage the petals with your fingers at the base of the bud. Delicately. It opens within 12–24 hours.

6. Keep away from fruit

Peonies are very ethylene-sensitive. Bananas or apples nearby will cut bouquet life in half.

How many peonies to give

Contested question. Our recommendations:

More than 25 peonies in one bouquet is rarely appropriate. A peony is large on its own — a bouquet of 51 becomes "absurdly big" and weighs 3+ kg.

Out of season prices are +50–80% on top of these.

• At home: immediate re-cut under water
