Lisianthus bouquets: count buds, not stems

Lisianthus stem with one open bloom and several unopened buds

Price per lisianthus stem looks steep next to a rose, and then you count what is actually on it. Three to seven buds sit along one branching stalk, at different stages, and they open in sequence over a week or so. Seven stems fill a vase the way fifteen single-headed flowers would, and they keep filling it as upper buds catch up. That arithmetic only works if your stems carry enough buds, which is worth checking before anything else.

Ask how many are closed.

Open, half open, tight

A bouquet made entirely of tight buds looks modest on the day it arrives and reaches its best around the fourth or fifth day. That suits a delivery to someone's home, where the flowers stay in one room and the recipient watches them change.

It suits a handover badly. If the moment of giving is the point, at a birthday dinner or on a stage, you want at least two open blooms per stem so the bouquet reads as full in the first second, and the shop can select for that when the order is placed early enough.

Tight buds that never open are a real failure, usually caused by stems cut too green. The sign is a bud that stays hard and pale for a week while the rest of the plant carries on.

What the recipient sees first

Most people say rose. An open bloom has that same spiral of petals with a soft ruffled edge, and in cream, blush and pale lilac the resemblance holds until you look down at the stalk.

Then differences appear: no thorns, a smooth grey-green stalk, and several flowers to a branch instead of one head on top. Florists use that likeness deliberately when a bouquet should look romantic without stating it as plainly as a dozen red roses would.

Colour range helps here. Lisianthus comes in shades most people call quiet, along with two-tone forms where a petal edge is picked out in a deeper colour, and none of it shouts across a room.

Living with it

Stems are hollow and thin, so they sour quickly in deep water. Fill your vase shallow, change it every two days, and recut with a sharp blade each time.

Cream lisianthus in a wide vase beside a window

A wide neck matters more than height. Squeezed into a narrow vase, side branches press against each other and crease exactly that ruffled edge you paid for.

Spent flowers dry on the stem instead of dropping. Pinch them out at the base as they go over, and the bouquet looks close to new for another few days.

Where it fits

It is a good flower for people who dislike strong scent, since it has almost none, and for rooms where a bouquet has to sit for a fortnight without much attention.

It is a poor choice when the occasion needs one large head at the front of the arrangement, because every bloom here is medium-sized and the effect is detailed rather than bold.

Handled upright and stood in water on arrival, lisianthus bouquets hold up well for a recipient in Tbilisi who is out for most of the day. Laid flat in a car for a couple of hours, the flexible tips curve towards the light and stay curved once the bunch is upright again.
