An evening, a stage and a photograph all favour the fresh version. Volume matters more than longevity there, nobody minds that the flowers finish in a fortnight, and a dozen heads under low light do something a single object in a box cannot. A gift that has to keep, travel or sit unattended favours the preserved one. Guests fly home with it, and it will wait in a room for someone who has not checked in yet. Three habits cover the rest of it: - wipe any finish off the lower stem before a fresh bunch goes into the vase, and stand that vase on a tray for the first days; - dust a preserved rose with a soft dry brush and keep it well away from a sunlit sill, since a bright window does more damage in one season than three years on a shelf; - handle the heads as little as you can, because every touch lifts a trace of the finish onto a thumb and it does not go back. Some shedding onto the table is normal with the fresh version and is not a fault in the work. Both versions dislike moisture, for different reasons, and that makes the rule easy to keep. The fresh one loses the flower while the finish still looks perfect. The preserved one loses the finish while the shape stays perfect. Either way the damage lands on the part that was being paid for. #### What the island adds Humidity here runs high all year, with temperatures usually between 25 and 33 °C, and from May to October the rain arrives in bursts. Both versions travel in a closed box until they are indoors, and we do not hand a gold order over in the open if there is any chance of a shower on the way.
