### Burgundy roses in Phuket: ordered from a screen, delivered into a room Deep reds are the hardest colours to buy from a screen, and burgundy sits in the middle of the problem. Cameras struggle with it, displays struggle with it, and the words used to sell it mean different things to different florists. What arrives is technically correct and visibly not what somebody had in mind. Nearly every burgundy order we take is placed from somewhere else. Guests book before they fly and families send flowers to an island they have never seen, so the screen is doing all of the work. The clock adds its share. Orders land overnight from other time zones, the island runs on UTC+7 with no daylight saving, and a question about shade sent at midnight gets answered when the workshop opens. Anyone who needs the colour agreed before the stems are cut should leave room for that gap. #### Why a photograph misleads A camera has far less range at the dark end than an eye does. Detail in a deep red head collapses into one flat tone, so the shot either loses the folds of the petals or comes out lifted and closer to bright red than the flower ever was. Retouching then pushes it further in whichever direction suits a product page. Add a display running warm or cold by a noticeable margin and the shade reaching you has passed through three separate distortions. Two phones show two different flowers. Studio lighting finishes the job. A dark rose lit from the side picks up a wine coloured glow that no hotel room ever supplies. #### Where it is going We ask for the address before agreeing a shade. Delivery runs 90 to 180 minutes along the west coast with separate windows for villas, marinas and airport routes, and during monsoon showers from May to October and in evening hill traffic we add route time. Where the flowers land decides more about the colour than the listing ever did. - A room at Rosewood Phuket or Trisara with a booked arrival time. Lamps there are warm, so the shade reads deeper than it did on screen. - A dinner by the sea in Kata or Karon: candles and dark wood, where burgundy needs a pale stem beside it to be seen at all. - A ceremony. The colour is matched against fabric, and we ask for a daylight photograph of that fabric before anything is confirmed. - An office in Phuket Town, where cool ceiling light flattens a dark head, so we build more contrast around it. Hours are 9 AM to 10 PM, and orders start from 2200 THB. Payment goes by bank card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PromptPay, bank transfer or cash to the courier in baht. A photograph taken at our bench solves most of this. We shoot the stems that are actually going out, in daylight, on the morning of the delivery rather than reusing a picture of the variety. Any florist can do it, and asking costs nothing. Humidity changes what you see as well.
