### Coral peonies in Phuket: a narrow window on an imported flower Coral varieties come early. They open near the start of the peony season, before most of the pink and white ones are ready, and they finish while the season is still running. Missing that window is the usual reason a coral order cannot be filled. #### What the window looks like from here Growers cut coral varieties in the first part of their season, and while they are running the shade is easy to get in quantity. Then it stops fairly abruptly, and the same supplier who had crates of it two weeks ago has none. Out of season the gap is covered from the other hemisphere, where the growing year runs on the opposite half of the calendar. Heads from those shipments are smaller, the list of varieties is short, and coral does not always appear on it. Nothing about that changes on an island. Peonies reach Phuket as a seasonal import in every month of the year, so the question is never what the weather is doing outside, only what is standing in the shipment that week. Two orders for the same shade a month apart are two different conversations. #### Why the answer takes a day Orchids, chrysanthemums, hydrangeas and roses move here in steady volume, and an order for any of them is a same-day conversation. A coral peony is not, because it is confirmed against a specific consignment rather than against a shelf. That is why we ask for the date before anything else. A florist who says yes to a fixed date without checking is guessing, and what turns up will be roses in a coral tone rather than peonies. Four things make the answer fast: - The date and the hour of the handover, since the stage we cut to depends on both. - How open the flowers should be when they arrive, which matters more for coral than for any other peony shade. - Whether the room has air conditioning, because coral fades as it opens and warmth speeds that up. - What happens if coral is unavailable: a warm pink peony, a cream one with coral roses beside it, or a different date. #### Getting them across the island Delivery runs 9 AM to 10 PM and takes 90 to 180 minutes along the west coast, with separate windows for villas, marinas and airport routes. During monsoon showers between May and October, and on the hill roads in the evening, we add route time rather than promise the earlier slot and miss it. Hotels take the handover at reception. Coral carries warmth without a romantic reading, which is why it turns up on resort birthdays and on anniversary dinners by the sea rather than on the heavier dates. Neither of those occasions needs the deepest version of the colour, and that widens the usable window by several days at each end. Heat is the other constraint on the schedule.
