The other started as a fresh cut rose whose sap was replaced with a glycerine based solution, and the metal finish went on afterwards, once the flower had already been taken out of its own biology. It arrives in a box or under a dome and it never sees water. That is the whole point of it. A preserved gilded rose asks for nothing, lasts a year to three provided it stays out of direct sun and away from damp, and can be put on a shelf on the day it arrives and left there. Nothing about it needs a recipient who is home, awake or paying attention. People buy this version for reasons that have little to do with flowers. It is a keepsake. It survives a suitcase, it will wait on a desk for someone who is travelling, and a year later it is still making the same point it made on the morning it was unwrapped.
