Chrysanthemum bouquets: one flower, two readings

Single-headed chrysanthemums in a plain vase on a reception desk

In some places chrysanthemums belong to graves and to days when families visit them, and nobody there would send them for a birthday. Elsewhere they are ordinary market-stall flowers, bought weekly and left on a kitchen table until next week's bunch arrives. Same stem, two readings, and which one applies depends entirely on who opens your delivery.

So ask about your recipient before you order.

Where it works without any explanation

An office is its safest home. Nothing in a bunch of single-headed chrysanthemums reads as courtship, so it can go to a colleague, a client or a landlord and be taken as courtesy. It survives a weekend behind closed blinds with nobody topping up a vase, which matters when a delivery lands late on a Friday. Reception desks tend to reorder every second week rather than every week, because last fortnight's bunch is usually still standing. Blooms themselves are close to scentless, so whoever sits beside that vase is not breathing perfume all day.

Foliage is a different matter. Crush a leaf between your fingers and you get a bitter herbal smell, closer to wormwood than to anything floral, and stripping lower leaves removes most of it.

The second steady use is sympathy. The association that rules the flower out for a birthday in some households is precisely what makes it correct at a funeral in those same households, and florists keep both readings in mind when a delivery address is unfamiliar.

Single-headed and spray

A single-headed stem carries one bloom, sometimes as broad as a small apple, on a straight stalk. A spray stem branches near the top and holds five to fifteen smaller heads instead. Five stems of the first kind give you five distinct points of colour; five of the second give you a dense mass with no gaps in it.

Mixing the two in one bouquet works when the large heads sit higher and the sprays fill the space beneath them.

Twelve months a year

Spray chrysanthemums in rust and ochre tones tied with ribbon

Greenhouse production runs without a season, which puts chrysanthemums on the bench in February and in September in the same quantity and at a similar price. Peonies make you wait half a year. Tulips thin out by midsummer. This flower does neither, and for an occasion that falls in an awkward month that is often the whole argument for it.

Autumn sales climb anyway, for reasons of palette rather than supply: the rust, ochre and deep red shades match what is happening outside the window.

Getting it home in one piece

Stems are woody at the base and drink slowly, so cut them at an angle with a sharp knife rather than crushing them with blunt scissors. Fill the vase to a hand's depth, no more, and change that water every two or three days. Strip every leaf that would sit below the waterline.

Order stems that are half open if the handover itself is the point of the delivery.

Given that longevity, chrysanthemums are the sensible choice when a recipient in Bishkek travels often or keeps unpredictable hours: a day waiting in a cool hallway costs the bouquet very little. Heat is the real enemy, and an hour in a hot car undoes more than any mistake made later at the sink.
