### Purple roses in Bali: how much of it, and how deep in the bunch Purple carries more visual weight than its share of stems suggests. Ten dark heads in a mixed arrangement do the work of fifteen pale ones and take up more attention than either the sender or the florist expects. That is a useful property when it is planned for and a nuisance when it is not. Roughly a third of a mixed bunch is usually enough. Past half, the arrangement starts to look heavy from across a room, and it looks heavier still under the warm lamps most villas use in the evening, where the colour drops towards brown and stops reading as purple at all. The same bunch on a terrace at eleven in the morning is a different object. Set deep in the bunch, behind and below the pale material, purple reads as shadow and gives the whole thing dimension, which is the effect people are usually after when they order it. Brought out to the edge, the same heads flatten into a purple wall with no depth behind it. The difference costs nothing and takes a florist about a minute. It is worth asking for by name, because a bouquet built quickly tends to put the striking colour where it will be seen first. Lilac roses grown as such are the exception. Their smoky, slightly greyed petals are gentle enough to lead an arrangement on their own, with white and green beside them and nothing else competing. Lisianthus does that job well here, macrophylla hydrangea fills the width behind it, and tropical foliage closes the base without adding another colour. Imported roses at 60 to 90 cm form the body of most of these builds. Ecuadorian stems up to 120 cm go into the tall work for a villa entrance or a ceremony. #### Weather, the drive and the hour it arrives Humidity speeds up opening, and an open bud spreads its pigment over more surface, so a purple arrangement built three days ahead of a dinner in Ubud is deliberately built tighter than one going out this afternoon. Above 30 °C we wrap firmly and pack a cooling element. From November to March the rain decides where the arrangement can stand more than it decides how it travels. Distance is the other half of it. Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur are 90 to 150 minutes from the workshop, while Uluwatu, Tabanan and the remote villas take up to 3 to 4 hours, and a dark bunch spends that whole time closed in a box. We agree the hour more precisely on those routes. Purple is the shade that suffers most from arriving early and waiting on a table in the sun. Three things settle the order: - The proportion of purple you want against everything else. - Whether it is being seen in daylight or under evening lamps. - Whether anything dark is already standing in that room.
