Scattering single heads through an arrangement produces speckle, and from across a room speckle turns into one muddled tone, whereas a group of three or four heads in a single shade holds together and gives the eye somewhere to land. If every group of one colour ends up on the same side, the bouquet has a bright face and a dull back, and the recipient finds that out the moment they carry it to a table. It is how the shades sit in relation to each other, and it shows in specific places. Start with the outer ring. On a hurried piece the darkest shade has been pushed to the edge because that was the easiest place to slot it in last, and the outline goes ragged, since dark heads read as holes against a pale wall. Then look into the centre, which on a careless build is packed with whatever was left over after the visible work was done. A mix put together with attention runs its strongest shade through the middle and out towards one shoulder, so the whole thing has a direction rather than a filled space. Cluster size scales with the bouquet, which is the part people get wrong when they order small. In a bunch of fifteen heads a cluster of three is already a visible block of colour, while the same three heads inside a hundred read as scatter, so a large mixed piece needs its groups built larger rather than its palette widened. Foliage is the last check. Tropical greenery pushed in to fill gaps between colours takes contrast away from every shade around it, and in a mixed piece it should be doing structural work or not be there at all. #### What that means for an island delivery Bouquets here spend real time in a car, and a build with a bright face and a dull back is the one that suffers. Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur are 90 to 150 minutes from the workshop, while Uluwatu, Tabanan and the more remote villas run 3 to 4 hours, so the arrangement is checked from every side before it is boxed rather than after.
