### Coral roses in Bali: how a single shade keeps its depth A bunch of one rose in one colour is the easiest thing to order and the easiest thing to get wrong. Identical heads of the same cultivar, cut to the same length, read as a flat block, and the eye finishes with them in about two seconds. Coral punishes that harder than most shades, because it is warm and even and has no dark centre to give the mass any structure. The fix is not a second colour. Cultivars do the work instead. Several coral roses sit within a few steps of each other, one leaning pink, another towards apricot, another carrying a paler reverse to the petal, and a bunch built from two or three of them still reads as one shade while giving the eye somewhere to travel. Nobody looking at the table will name a cultivar. They will simply keep looking for longer than they meant to. The word itself is the weak point in all of this. Coral covers a stretch wide enough that two florists can both be right and hand over different flowers, so for ceremony work we agree the direction of the drift in daylight before anything is ordered in. The stage of the head is the second lever. Tight buds sit darker than open ones in this group, so a spread of stages produces a gradient across the arrangement without a single different flower going into it. Height is the third. Heads set at slightly different levels throw shadow between them, and shadow is exactly what a warm even colour lacks. Imported roses at 60-90 cm cover most of that work, with Ecuadorian stems up to 120 cm going in where a piece has to hold a room rather than a table. That gives us four things to settle before anything gets cut: - how many heads the space actually needs; - whether the drift inside the shade should go towards pink or towards apricot; - how wide a spread of stages the piece can carry, which depends on how many days it has to last; - the height. #### Building this on the island Long tables are the common brief here. Villa dinners, Jimbaran ceremonies and hotel work at Nusa Dua all ask for a single warm shade across a length of table, and that is the format where a flat block of identical heads shows up worst, because guests sit with it for hours instead of glancing at it once. Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur run on a 90-150 minute window. Uluwatu, Tabanan and the remote villas take 3-4 hours, and for a mixed stage arrangement that matters, since the tightest buds in the piece keep moving during the drive. Table work also gets finished on site more often than at the bench. A long arrangement travels in sections, and the levels that create the shadow between heads are set once the piece is standing where people will see it. We work from 9 AM to 10 PM. A short dinner takes fewer heads at one stage, a week on a villa takes a wider spread of buds, and in both cases the shade stays the same while the depth inside it changes completely.
