Cut stems in this group last roughly one to two weeks with a fresh angled cut and water changed regularly, and a villa kitchen is where that either happens or does not. Warm rooms speed everything up, so a vase in air conditioning buys days that a vase on a veranda will not. Any open head with visible anthers should have had them cut away before the flowers left us, since pollen stains a pale petal and warm mixes usually contain pale material. Soft stems want shallow clean water instead of a vase filled to the brim. Three habits matter more here than they would elsewhere: - Keep the vase away from a fruit bowl. Ripening fruit gives off ethylene, and it shortens the life of every flower standing near it. - Change the water instead of topping it up, because warm humid air turns a vase cloudy quickly. - Move the flowers off an open veranda by the afternoon, since reflected light and heat do more damage than the drive ever did. None of that is complicated and most of it gets skipped. A card in the box with two lines on it does more for a bouquet than five extra stems. Water discipline beats stem count. Orange bouquets in Bali go mostly to birthdays, to new homes and to thanking somebody. The tone reads as cheerful and friendly, which is exactly why it makes a poor fit for romance.
